Royal fans set to get first glimpse inside King Charles’ Balmoral home as doors open to public

James Hamilton Goddard and his team at the Balmoral Estate have meticulously prepared several grand rooms for public viewing, offering a rare glimpse into the private world of the Royal family. The castle, nestled in the picturesque Scottish Highlands, has been transformed into a welcoming space, curated to showcase its historical and cultural significance.

“It’s a magnificent place,” shared Goddard. “I think the King wants people to see it.” Visitors lucky enough to secure tickets will explore the entrance hall, red corridor, main and family dining rooms, page’s lobby, library, and drawing room, all of which exude a distinctly homely yet regal atmosphere.

Balmoral Castle, constructed in the 1850s following the admiration of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert for the area, stands as a testament to their enduring love for Scotland. King Charles, continuing this tradition, has reinstated the Hunting Stewart tartan carpets in the drawing room, reminiscent of the original decor cherished by Victoria herself.

Inside the castle, the walls are adorned with paintings by Victorian artist Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, chosen by King Charles to reflect his ancestor Queen Victoria’s passion for art. Landseer, famous for his iconic sculptures and paintings like the lions at Trafalgar Square, spent summers imparting art lessons to Victoria and Albert at Balmoral.

Among the highlights of the tour is the library, now used as King Charles’s study, once a dining room for Victoria and Albert. It now houses a collection of books ranging from Scottish history and Highland clans to Albert’s speeches, novels, poetry, and art—a testament to the King’s intellectual pursuits and his role in international diplomacy.

A notable addition to the castle’s exhibits is a full-size bronze statue of Malcolm Canmore, a significant figure in Scottish history during the 11th century, adding further historical depth to the private tour experience.
