How to Revitalize Orchids with Dead Roots
If an orchid is experiencing weakness, particularly in its roots, taking corrective action is crucial. Follow these steps to revitalize an orchid with dead roots:
- Trim Damaged Roots: Use scissors to carefully trim damaged roots, removing any portions that may hinder the plant’s recovery.
- Prepare the Pot: Select a pot with good drainage and add a layer of gravel to facilitate excess water drainage into the saucer.
- Add Sand: Pour a small amount of sand into the pot. Create small holes in the sand using your fingers, where you’ll later insert the orchid roots.
- Plant the Orchid: Place the orchid in the pot, ensuring the roots are inserted into the holes in the sand. Water the plant, allowing excess water to collect in the saucer.
- Provide Sunlight and Ventilation: Position the plant in a sunny but well-ventilated location. You’ll observe root growth as the plant regains vitality and begins to flower again.
- Transplant the Orchid: Once the orchid has recovered and bloomed, gently remove it from the pot. Clean the roots and transplant it into a new pot with stones at the bottom for drainage.
