Princess Diana’s whispered remark that first revealed troubles with King Charles

All eyes were on Princess Diana and the then-Prince Charles in the run-up to their wedding – but she hinted there was trouble in paradise before their big day.

Lady Diana Spencer, who was 20 at the time, stole the hearts of millions of Brits when she took part in her engagement interviews ahead of her wedding on July 29, 1981. She was elegant, witty and seemed to be a hit with royal supporters. However, just a few days before her nuptials with the now-King Charles, she let her guard down during a party, which is when she suggested that all was not well between them.

On Thursday, July 3, the couple attended a garden event at Buckingham Palace for people with disabilities. And just as could be expected, they made the rounds at the party and ensured they greeted and conversed with as many guests as they could. But as a well-wisher made the obvious gesture of wishing them good luck, Diana covered her mouth.

She stopped in front of the Daily Mirror’s feature writer John Edwards and let slip that she had gotten into a row with Prince Charles. He told Channel 5 documentary, Charles and Di: The Truth Behind their Wedding: “There was a great humour about, an interest in the people she was talking to. She stopped right in front of me, we were only a few foot apart, and somebody said to her ‘good luck darling’.
